Haiti: Nationwide strike and protests planned October 28-30

Opposition leaders have called for a three-days nationwide strike starting from Monday, October 28. Related demonstrations are also likely to take place, notably in Port-au-Prince. Business and administration services' disruptions are likely during the social movement.

Furthermore, members of the Grand Ravine criminal gang have warned they would open fire on government and diplomatic vehicles in the Grand Ravine area of the capital, to denounce a lack of basic services and high poverty. Roadblocks have also been reported on the Route Nationale 1 (RN1) in the Arcahaie and Canaan areas of Port-au-Prince.

A heightened security presence and localized transport disruptions are expected near all protest sites. Clashes between security forces and protesters cannot be ruled out.

Haiti has faced numerous demonstrations in recent months calling for greater government transparency after several public officials, including President Jovenel Moïse, were implicated in a scandal related to the alleged misuse of PetroCaribe funds. Protests have segmented society and exacerbated an already unstable political situation.
