Authorities announce normal service to resume at Wamena airport (WMX) in the coming days; confirm flight reservations

Informational

Event

On Sunday, October 13, the transportation ministry indicated that Wamena Airport (WMX) could resume normal operations over the coming days. Although some regular flights have already resumed operations, the exact date of resumption has yet to be confirmed.

Context

Wamena airport (WMX) has been closed since violent protests broke out in Papua on Monday, September 23. In the city of Wamena, dozens of protesters were killed in violent clashes and around 16,000 residents have left the area.

Demonstrations in Papua and West Papua were initially launched after security forces stormed a university dormitory in Surabaya on August 17, rounding up 43 students accused of desecrating the Indonesian flag.

Advice

Individuals traveling via WMX are advised to monitor the situation, prepare for lingering flight disruptions, and contact their airlines to confirm or modify flight reservations.
