Israeli authorities announced on Tuesday, September 24, that a low-emission-zone will be operational in Jerusalem starting in November. Under new regulations, heavy polluting diesel vehicles (manufactured prior to 2006 and with a total weight of more than 3.5 tons) will be prohibited from entering certain areas of downtown Jerusalem, unless they are fitted with special pollution-reducing particle filters.
The zone will be in the perimeter of Haneviim Street to the north, Natan Strauss Street and King George Street to the west, Gershon Agron Street to the south, and Heil Hahandasa Street to the east. Drivers of unauthorized vehicles will face fines should they not comply with regulations. Reports indicate that the ban is to be gradually expanded to the entire city.
