Japan: Typhoon Hagibis continues to strengthen October 9 /update 2

Event

The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that Typhoon Hagibis remains a “violent” storm (the highest level) as of the morning (local time) of Wednesday, October 9. According to forecasts on Wednesday, Hagibis may directly pass over the Kanto region on Saturday, October 12, bringing damaging winds, heavy rains, and dangerous sea conditions. The typhoon is expected to peak in intensity on October 9 before slightly weakening as it moves towards Honshu island. According to the JMA, it is possible that Hagibis will change directions or curve east into the sea before making landfall. Flooding, landslides, and other dangerous conditions are anticipated in the region in the coming days.

As of 09:00 on Wednesday, Typhoon Hagibis is located at 19.8°N 140.4°E (map here) and is tracking northwest at 20 kph (12 mph), with maximum wind gusts of 277 kph (172 mph).

Associated transportation disruptions, including to flights, rail, and ferry service, are possible in the affected areas. Power outages may also occur.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm flight reservations, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
