Armed assailants launched an attack in Kinigi (Musanze district), near Volcanoes National Park, at approximately 21:30 (local time) on Friday, October 4, killing eight people and wounding several others. The attackers were reportedly confronted and driven away by security forces in the area, and searches for the assailants are ongoing as of Saturday, October 5.

A heightened security presence is to be expected in the area over the coming hours and days. Similar attacks are possible over the near term.

Context

Volcanoes National Park is a popular tourist attraction in northwestern Rwanda.
