Tunisia: Presidential run-off election set for October 13 /update 2

The Independent High Authority for Elections announced on Friday, September 27, that a presidential run-off election will be held on Sunday, October 13. Voters will decide between Kais Saied and Nabil Karoui, the two candidates who won the first round of the presidential election that took place on Sunday, September 15. Saied, a law professor not affiliated to any party, won 18.4% of the votes while Karoui, a businessman and founder of the Qalb Tounes party won 15.58%. Karoui is currently under investigation on charges of tax evasion and money laundering. On Tuesday, a court ruled that he must remain in pre-trial detention, though he will be allowed to compete in the October 13 run-off.

A heightened security presence, as well as associated political protests and transportation disruptions, are likely leading up to, during, and following the elections.

Context

The presidential election seeks to replace President Beji Caid Essebsi, who died on July 25. Former speaker of parliament, Mohamed Ennaceur, is currently serving as interim president. The elections were set to take place on November 17 but were rescheduled due to Essebsi's sudden death.
