Leaders of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) opposition party have announced plans to hold a march in the capital Harare on Thursday, October 24. The Secretary-General of the MDC, Chalton Hwende, released a statement on Friday, October 18, calling for all Zimbabweans to participate in the demonstration to denounce current economic conditions, low salaries, and an increasing cost of living. According to local media reports police officials have denied the MDC permission to hold the march. As of Tuesday, October 22, it is unclear if the rally will go ahead despite the ban.
A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are anticipated around demonstration sites. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.
