Taiwan: Tropical Storm Fong-Wong to bring rain November 21-23

Severe Tropical Storm Fong-Wong forecast to move past Taiwan November 22-23, bringing potentially heavy rain to parts of the island; associated flooding and disruptions possible

Severe Tropical Storm Fong-Wong is currently moving northwest through the Philippine Sea and is expected to move past Taiwan on Friday, November 22, and Saturday, November 23. According to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) rains from the storm may hit Taiwan as early as Thursday, November 21, particularly in the northern and eastern parts of the island. As of Thursday morning (local time), heavy rain advisories are in effect for New Taipei City, Yilan county, and Keelung City. Associated flooding and business and transportation disruptions are possible in the coming days.

As of 08:00 on Thursday, Fong-Wong is located at approximately 20.20°N 125.00°E (map here) and is moving north-northwest at 8 kph (5 mph).

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm flight reservations, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
