Zimbabwe: Public sector workers to protest November 6

Unions representing public sector workers announce mass protest planned for November 6; heightened security measures and associated disruptions expected

Warning

Event

The Apex Council, the union coalition representing public sector workers, announced on Thursday, October 31, that it will organize mass protests on Wednesday, November 6. Union leaders claim that the government has failed to respond to their demands to index salaries to the US dollar to protect workers against inflation. Public sector workers are being asked to gather at the Public Service House in Harare before marching to the Finance Ministry office. The exact time of the demonstration has not been released as of October 31.

Heightened security measures and associated traffic and business disruptions are anticipated along the march route. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Individuals in Harare are advised to avoid any public gatherings, minimize movements during protests as a precaution, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
