Australia: Tram union confirms strike in Melbourne (Victoria state) December 5 /update 1

Members of the Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RBTU) voted to hold a tram strike in Melbourne (Victoria state) on Thursday, December 5, to demand higher pay and improved working conditions. Tram service is expected to cease between 10:00 and 14:00 (local time), however, the tram operator Yarra Trams has warned of significant disruptions from 10:00 to approximately 15:30. Metropolitan trains, buses, and V/Line trains are not expected to be affected by the strike. Public transport officials have confirmed limited replacement bus services. Representatives of Yarra Tram have advised passengers to avoid non-essential travel and consider alternative means of transport during the work stoppage. RBTU members carried out a similar strike on Thursday, November 28, affecting thousands of commuters in Melbourne.
