Haiti: Nationwide anti-government protests possible starting January 1

Unconfirmed reports have emerged that the Consensual Alternative for the Refoundation of Haiti has called for a series of nationwide protests from Wednesday, January 1, through Monday, January 13. January 1 may be treated as a national mobilization day, for which large crowds of protesters should be expected throughout urban centers if protests do in fact take place.

Should protests go ahead, participants may protest at President Jovenel Moïse's residence at Pèlerin 5 in Pétionville and at the National Palace in Port-au-Prince. Related protests may also take place in Jacmel, Les Cayes, Gonaïves, Mirebalais, and Arcahaie, among others.

Related protests are to be expected, spontaneous or otherwise, until January 13. 

A heightened security presence is expected near all protests. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Context

Haiti has faced numerous demonstrations in recent months calling for greater government transparency after several public officials, including President Jovenel Moïse, were implicated in a scandal related to the alleged misuse of PetroCaribe funds. Protests have segmented society and exacerbated an already unstable political situation.
