Philippines: Multiple aftershocks recorded in Davao del Sur (Mindanao) Decemeber 15 /update 1

Event

At least two aftershocks with magnitudes of 5.2 and 5.7 have been reported in Davao del Sur province (Davao region) on Mindanao Island as of 15:20 (local time) on Sunday, December 15, following an earlier 6.8-magnitude earthquake.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the initial earthquake at 14:10 in Matanao municipality (Davao region). No tsunami warnings have been issued, however, local media reports and images circulating on social media indicate that several infrastructures have been damaged, and a number of individuals have been injured. General Santos Airport (GES) has reportedly not had electricity since 14:10. Rescue and recovery operations are ongoing in the region as of 15:45 on Sunday. 

Details regarding the extent of the damage are still emerging; significant transportation, business, and power disruptions are expected in the coming hours and days. More aftershocks are possible in the affected area in the immediate term.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks. In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
