Philippines: Tropical Cyclone Ursula to impact central regions December 24-25

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issued a statement at 11:00 (local time) on Monday, December 23, warning of heavy rain and strong winds between Tuesday, December 24, through Wednesday, December 25, due to Tropical Cyclone Ursula. PAGASA forecasts moderate to heavy rains in several areas across the Eastern Visayas, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Caraga, Bicol, Mimaropa, and Calabarzon regions. The meteorology agency also expects strong winds to impact the Eastern Visayas region and northeastern Mindanao island from Tuesday morning, and the southern portion of Bicol Region and some portions of Central Visayas from Tuesday afternoon. PAGASA advises against sea travel along the northern and eastern coasts of the Bicol Region or the eastern coast of the Eastern Visayas and Caraga regions from Monday night through to Tuesday due to rough seas. Disruptions to maritime travel may occur in the coming days. Associated flooding, landslides, and transportation disruptions are anticipated, as well as disruptions to power and communication services.

As of 10:00 (local time) on Monday, Cyclone Ursula is located at approximately 9.7°N 133.4°E (map here) and is moving northwest at 30 kph (19 mph). The storm has maximum sustained winds of 65 kph (40 mph) with gusts up to 80 kph (50 mph). According to PAGASA, Ursula is expected to intensify into a Severe Tropical Storm prior to landfall on Tuesday afternoon.
