Philippines: Typhoon Ursula death toll rises to 28 December 27 /update 5

Typhoon Ursula (Phanfone) has left 28 people dead as of Friday, December 27. The fatalities were concentrated in the central provinces of Capiz, Iloilo, and Leyte. Local authorities expect the death toll to rise as rescue operations continue over the coming days. More than 58,000 people were evacuated due to the typhoon, which made landfall on Tuesday, December 24, resulting in severe flooding and damage across the country.

Power disruptions have been reported nationwide. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), some 115 domestic flights have been canceled through Friday, leaving more than 15,700 passengers stranded. Further transportation, power, and communication disruptions are anticipated in the coming hours and days.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issued a statement at 23:00 (local time) on Friday forecasting Ursula to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on the morning on Saturday, December 28. According to PAGASA, Ursula is no longer causing significant heavy rainfall across any part of the Philippines, though moderate rains can be expected over Batanes along with the associated risk of flooding and landslides. The meteorology agency also continues to advise against sea travel due to rough sea conditions.
