Afghanistan: At least 17 respiratory infection deaths reported in Kabul between December 24-31

According to the Ministry of Public Health, over 8800 cases of respiratory infection and 17 related deaths have been recorded in Kabul between Tuesday, December 24, and Tuesday, December 31, following a peak of air pollution in the capital.

As of Tuesday, December 31, unhealthy air quality levels were recorded in Kabul, where an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 93 has been recorded at the US Embassy at around 14:00 (local time).

According to the Ministry, several businesses were closed across the city on Sunday, December 29, as part of an ongoing campaign to reduce the use of low-quality fuel. Further actions, including free mask distributions, are expected through the city over the coming weeks.

An AQI reading of 0-50 is considered good, 51-100 moderate, and 101-200+ unhealthy.
