6.2-magnitude earthquake strikes south-southwest of Sinabang (Aceh province) on January 7; no tsunami warning immediately issued
Event
The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 6.2-magnitude earthquake 16.7 km (10.4 mi) south-southwest of Sinabang (Aceh province) on Tuesday, January 7. The quake hit at around 13:05 (local time) at a depth of 20 km (12 mi). There were no immediate reports of injuries, nor have authorities issued a tsunami warning. No significant damages have been reported as of 13:30 on Tuesday.
Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.

Individuals in Aceh and North Sumatra provinces are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks.
In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
