Recovery and rescue operations are ongoing in and around Jakarta as of January 4 following significant flooding; death toll increases to at least 60 people

Rescue and recovery operations continued on Saturday, January 4, in and around the capital city Jakarta following significant flooding in recent days. As of Saturday, at least 60 people have been killed since Wednesday, January 1. According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, the death toll may continue to rise as rescuers search villages impacted by landslides. At least 92,000 people remain in emergency shelters after being evacuated from their homes. Some communities remain isolated due to damage to roads and bridges. Police and military personnel are using helicopters to drop food and supplies in cutoff areas.
Additional heavy rain is forecast for Jakarta through Tuesday, January 7. Further flooding, landslides, and transportation and business disruptions are possible, as well as disruptions to power and communication services over the coming days.

Individuals in the Jakarta, West Java, and Banten are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions and flight reservations before setting out, anticipate transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
