Normal flight operations have resumed at the Halim Perdana Kusuma Airport (HLP) located in east Jakarta at 16:30 (local time) on Wednesday, January 1, after significant flooding triggered the suspension of operations and the cancelation of at least 29 flights earlier that the day.

As of Thursday, January 2, significant flooding continues across Jakarta, West Java, and Banten, causing significant business and traffic disruptions.

Additional heavy rain is forecast for Jakarta through Tuesday, January 7. Further flooding, landslides, and transportation and business disruptions are possible, as well as disruptions to power and communication services over the coming days.

Context

Flash flooding and landslides have been reported in West Java, Banten, and Jakarta, after heavy rain began on December 31, killing at least 21 people and displacing 30,000 others as of January 2.

Individuals in the Jakarta, West Java, and Banten are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions and flight reservations before setting out, anticipate transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
