Japan: 5.1-magnitude earthquake strikes off the coast of Kashima January 14

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 5.1-magnitude earthquake around 40 km (25 mi) east-northeast of Kashima (Ibaraki, Honshū) on Tuesday, January 14. The quake hit at around 13:25 (local time) at a depth of 35 km (22 mi). No tsunami warning was immediately issued. Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.
