Mozambique: Suspected militants ambush civilians in Cabo Delgado January 3 /update 2

Suspected militants kill several people during an ambush in Macomia district (Cabo Delgado province) on January 3; similar attacks possible over the near term

A minibus traveling through Cabo Delgado province’s Macomia district was reportedly ambushed by unidentified militants on Friday, January 3. According to police officials, the attack occurred approximately 100 km (62 mi) south of Antadora. Several people were killed in the ambush but as of Saturday, January 4, local authorities have not released an official death toll.

Similar attacks are possible in Cabo Delgado province over the near term.

Context

This is the first attack attributed to militant groups in Cabo Delgado province in 2020. Ahlu Sunna Wa-Jamo/Ansar Al-Sunna (Al-Shabaab) is believed to be responsible for carrying out attacks against local businesses, government installations, and security forces in Cabo Delgado province since October 2017. The Islamic State group has also claimed to be active in the province and alleged that its militants carried out the group's first attack in Mocímboa da Praia district in June 2019.
