Samoa: Tropical disturbance brings flooding and strong winds to the islands February 18

On Tuesday, February 18, Tropical Disturbance 08F hit Samoa, bringing winds of up to 111 kph (69 mph), heavy rain, and dangerous waves. The Samoa Meteorology Division has issued wind and heavy rain warnings for all of Samoa, and flood warnings for all major river, vulnerable, and coastal areas. Schools have also been closed through Friday, February 21.

The Fiji Meteorological service has reported the risk of the tropical disturbance becoming a cyclone over the next 24 to 48 hours is moderate as the weather system moves southeast.

Individuals in Samoa are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate lingering transportation and business disruptions, confirm flight reservations, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
