Syria: Government forces advance into Aleppo Governorate February 16
Syrian forces make advances in rebel-held Aleppo Governorate on February 16; further attacks expected
Event
On Sunday, February 16, media sources reported that Syrian and Russian forces carried out several air strikes in the Aleppo Governorate - a known rebel-held area - which allowed Syrian forces to take control of larger swaths of the Governorate, including Anadan.
These advancements come ahead of a scheduled negotiation between Syria and Turkey, which backs opposition forces. Recent attacks in Idlib killed Turkish troops and should prove to be a point of contention in the talks.
Context
To date, the Syrian conflict involves many parties, including the Syrian government, the Russian government, the Iranian government, the Turkish government, a US-led coalition, and numerous armed groups on the ground (including the Islamic State) with competing goals.
Advice
Due to extremely poor security conditions, Western governments generally advise against all travel to Syria, with some banning travel to the country. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to any travel to Syria.
