At least 20 people were killed and 16 others injured in a stampede during a church service in Kilimanjaro region on Sunday, February 2. An estimated 10,000 people had gathered at a sports stadium in the town of Moshi for the service. The stampede occurred after attendees rushed forward to be anointed by Pastor Boniface Mwamposa. Mwamposa was later arrested in Dar Es Salaam for his role in the incident.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected in the area over the coming hours.
