Heavy rains and flash floods kill at least five people in Nasai district (Badakhshan province) and Jawand district (Badghis province) on April 15; transportation disruptions expected in the affected areas
Event
Heavy rains and flash flooding in Badakhshan and western Badghis provinces have left at least five people dead on Wednesday, April 15. Flooding killed three individuals in Nasai district (Badakshan province), and at least six houses were washed away in the district. Separately, two casualties were reported in Jawand district (Badghis province) and several houses were damaged due to the flooding.
Several parts of Afghanistan experienced heavy rains and flooding in the past few days. Additional rainfall in some affected areas may cause further flooding over the coming days. Lingering disruptions are possible in the affected provinces in the near term.
Advice
Individuals in northern Afghanistan, particularly Badakhshan and Badghis provinces, are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas affected by flooding, anticipate lingering transportation, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult. Floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
