Kenya: Intercommunal clashes reported in Narok county April 7

Event

More than ten houses were burned down and several others were vandalised after clashes erupted between Maasai clans in the Trans Mara West sub-county (Narok county) on Tuesday evening (local time), April 7. As of Tuesday, clashes have been reported in the villages of Sikawa, Moita, Ndonyo, and Oldanyati along the Nkararo-Entooretet boundary. According to police officials, two arrests have been made since the incident.

Similar clashes were reported in Narok county on Friday, April 3, and additional security personnel have been dispatched to the area. Further clashes are possible in the near term.

Context

The Trans Mara intra-border dispute has been ongoing since the 1970s and has led to frequent intercommunal clashes in the region. Government records state that dozens have been killed and hundreds severely injured since the clashes between rival clans began.
