Mozambique: Militants attack timber camp in Sussundenga (Manica province) April 6

Event

Rebels suspected to belong to the armed wing of the Mozambique National Resistance (Renamo) attacked a camp belonging to a timber company in Sussundenga district (Manica province) on Monday, April 6. One person was killed and seven trucks were set alight in the attack that took place in the Chambuca area of Dombe in Sussundenga district. The militants were thought to be from the Mozambique National Resistance (Renamo) group.

On Tuesday, April 2, two buses were attacked by armed assailants along the National Road Number 1 (EN1) in Mutindiri in Sofala province. Five people were wounded in the attacks that occurred just hours apart.

Further attacks in Sofala and Manica provinces are possible in the coming days and weeks.

Context

In August 2019, the Peace and National Reconciliation Agreement was signed between President Filipe Nyusi and Renamo leader Ossufo Momade which called for the immediate disarmament and reintegration into society of more than 5000 Renamo rebels. The agreement also intended to allow for greater political participation for Renamo members; however, due to a lack of opportunity to obtain some share of political power, elements of Renamo have continued their violent attacks.

Advice

Members are advised to maintain a heightened level of vigilance due to the threat of militant / rebels attacks. Any suspicious activity or items should be reported to security forces and stringent security and journey management protocols should be adopted, particularly for travel to rural areas. Where possible, liaise with local authorities when planning itineraries in order to avoid areas of high militant activity or ongoing security operations.
