Mozambique: Suspected militants conduct a series of attacks in Cabo Delgado province April 6-7 /update 3

Suspected jihadist militants conducted a series of attacks in eight villages in Cabo Delgado province on Monday, April 6, and Tuesday, April 7.

According to local media sources, the militants briefly occupied several villages located within an 150km (93.2mi) radius of the provincial capital Pemba on April 6 and April 7. There have been no immediate reports of casualties. Reports indicate that during the assaults the militants took some residents hostage before destroying churches, houses and other infrastructure, and then withdrawing. The attacks on Monday took place the Mingueleua and Bilibiza localities. Similar incidents were reported on Tuesday in six other villages including in the Muatide and Mueda localities.

Additional militant attacks and security operations are expected in the province over the near term.

Context

Ahlu Sunna Wa-Jamo/Ansar Al-Sunna (Al-Shabaab) is believed to be responsible for carrying out attacks against local businesses, government installations, and security forces in Cabo Delgado province since October 2017. The Islamic State group has also claimed to be active in the province and alleged that its militants carried out the group's first attack in Mocímboa da Praia district in June 2019.
