Solomon Islands: Nationwide tropical cyclone warning issued April 3

Event

The Solomon Islands Meteorological Service issued a tropical cyclone warning for all provinces due to the presence of Tropical Cyclone Harold in the archipelago on Friday, April 3. The Category One storm system formed in the Coral Sea and although the centre of the storm has passed southeast of Honiara, strong winds caused power outages and felled trees in the capital on the night (local time) of Thursday, April 2.  Harold is forecast to gain strength and may become a Category Two storm as it moves towards Rennell and Bellona islands, before tracking towards Vanuatu.

Authorities have advised people to take precautions against potential flash flooding and landslides in low lying areas and areas close to river banks, as isolated heavy rainfall is expected.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, avoid sea travel, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
