Indonesia: Flooding in Java affects over 81,000 as of May 5

Heavy rains over the island of Java, ongoing since Saturday, April 30, has caused widespread flooding and damage, affecting more than 81,000 people and displacing 2000 as of Tuesday, May 5. Over 21,000 homes and several public buildings in Bandung regency (West Java province) have been flooded. Additionally, landslides were reported in Sukabungah district, where residents were ordered to evacuate. The National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB) also reported further flooding in Cilegon city (Banten province), where water levels reached a height of 40 cm (16 in) and 200 cm (78 in) on Monday, May 4.

Moderate to heavy rain is forecast over the affected areas in the next 24 hours and additional flooding and associated disruptions are possible. 

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate lingering transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
