Filipino soldiers kill two Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) militants in Maguindanao province on May 23: further clashes likely in southern regions over the near term

Filipino security forces clashed with Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) militants in the Mamasapano municipality (Maguindanao province) on Saturday, May 23. The clashes reportedly erupted at a security checkpoint in the barangay Tuka area of the municipality, when the militants opened fire on the security forces. According to local sources, the security forces killed at least two militants during a prolonged firefight.
Further security operations, as well as clashes between security forces and BIFF militants, are possible in Maguindanao province in the near term.

The Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) is an Islamist militant organization and Moro secessionist group active in the Mindanao region. The group has been active since 2008 when it split from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
