Philippines: Tropical Storm Ambo to hit eastern, central, and northern regions May 12-16 /update 1

Tropical Depression Ambo developed into Tropical Storm Ambo (international name Vongfong) on Tuesday, May 12, as it approaches the Philippines, making it the first tropical cyclone of the Northwestern Pacific Ocean typhoon season. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has forecast that Ambro will bring rainfall to parts of Mindanao island and Eastern Visayas region between Tuesday evening (local time) and Wednesday, May 13. Heavier rainfall and tropical cyclone force winds are forecast from Wednesday to Thursday, May 14, in Eastern Visayas and in Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, and Masbate provinces in Bicol region as the storm system approaches land. Rough seas will be experienced over the eastern seaboards of Eastern Visayas and Bicol over the next few days. Ambo is forecast to track north over Luzon through Friday, May 15, and Saturday, May 16, but its exact path and strength may change as the storm approaches the island.

PAGASA has warned that heavy rainfall and strong winds from Ambo could lead to flash floods and landslides in affected areas. Associated transport and business disruptions are possible during the passing of the storm system in the coming hours and days.
