Rwanda: Flooding and landslides kill at least 72 nationwide as of May 13 /update 3
Death toll from heavy rains and associated flooding climbs to at least 72 nationwide as of May 13; further adverse weather expected over the near term
Event
As of Wednesday, May 13, weeks of heavy rainfall and associated flooding and landslides have caused at least 72 deaths throughout Rwanda. Adverse weather has been affecting Rwanda since the beginning of May, particularly in the Northern, Western, and Southern provinces. Media reports indicate that more than 91 homes have been destroyed, five bridges damaged, and several roads rendered impassable, including those connecting Kigali to rural areas. The UN reports that thousands of people have been displaced since the beginning of the rainy season in March.
Further rainfall is expected across Rwanda in the near term; associated transportation disruptions are to be anticipated.
Context
Storms and severe floods regularly impact Rwanda during the rainy seasons (from February to April and again from November to January). Flooding can cause landslides, especially in rural areas.
Advice
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
