Protesters gather in at least seven cities on May 28; further demonstrations are possible in the near term

On Thursday, May 28, hundreds of protesters gathered in at least seven cities demanding jobs amid the country's ongoing economic crisis. Larger demonstrations with hundreds of participants took place in Gafsa, Hajeb El Ayoun, and Sidi Bouzid. Further smaller demonstrations were reported in Beja, Kasserine, Sfax, and Tozeur.
Separately, similar sit-in protests were also held in Gafsa on Wednesday, May 27.
Reports suggest that the demonstrations remained peaceful in nature, however, further protests and a heightened security presence should be anticipated in the near term.
