A 5.9-magnitude earthquake strikes south-southwest of Kokopo (East New Britain Province) on June 8; no tsunami warning immediately issued

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 5.9-magnitude earthquake around 131 km (81.4 mi) south-southwest of Kokopo (East New Britain Province) on Monday, June 8. The quake hit at around 06:06 (local time) at a depth of 52.8 km (32.1 mi). No tsunami warning was immediately issued.
Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.
