The Rwandan Defence Force (RDF) reported that it had repulsed a group of armed attackers who approached from over the Burundian border in Ruheru district (Nyaruguru district, Southern province) on Saturday, June 27. The attack occurred in the early hours (local time) of Saturday morning and four of the assailants were killed in the fighting, and three others captured. Three Rwandan soldiers were lightly wounded in the skirmish. The attackers reportedly fled back into Burundi and left behind various items of military equipment.
A heightened security presence is expected along the border in the near term and further cross-border clashes cannot be ruled out.
