Syria: Suspected Israeli airstrikes target pro-Iranian militia sites in Deir ez-Zur and As-Suwayda provinces June 23

Event

Suspected Israeli aircraft carried out airstrikes targeting pro-Iranian militia sites in the Deir ez-Zur and As-Suwayda provinces on Tuesday evening (local time), June 23, killing at least seven people and wounding several others. Five Iranian militants were reportedly killed after one of the airstrikes hit a pro-Iranian militia base in the Kobajjep area of Deir ez-Zur province. In addition, two Syrian soldiers were killed following airstrikes on a communications center and radar in Tel el-Sahn in As-Suwayda province. There has been no comment from the Israeli government in regard to the airstrikes.

Further airstrikes in the abovementioned areas are a possibility in the near term.

Context

The Israeli military has struck more than 200 targets in Syria over the past two years, many of which have been arms depots and military facilities allegedly receiving arms and fighters from Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah group.
