Hundreds gather in Taipei for peaceful Black Lives Matter demonstration June 13; avoid all protests as a precaution

Hundreds of people gathered in the capital Taipei to participate in a Black Lives Matter (BLM) demonstration on Saturday, June 13. The rally was attended by more than 500 people and remained peaceful, although a light police presence was reported. The protest was attended by BLM supporters, along with indigenous Taiwanese citizens who voiced their opposition to discrimination against them.
Further protests are possible in Taiwan over the near term.
Context
Protests began worldwide after US citizen George Floyd died while being arrested by Minneapolis police officers on May 25. The four arresting police officers were subsequently fired and detained, and one has since been charged with second-degree murder. Protests have since spread to a number of cities across the US, with solidarity protests taking place throughout the world.
