US: Authorities announce overnight curfew for New York City June 1 /update 1

On Monday, June 1, Governor Mario Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that an overnight curfew will be imposed in greater New York City amid a sixth consecutive day of protests in response to recent unrest over the police-related death of George Floyd. The curfew will be in effect from 23:00 to 05:00 (local time) and is subject to be extended further. The mayor announced that as many as 8,000 police will be deployed throughout the night, up 4000 from the night before. The curfew was determined following violence and property damage overnight on Sunday, May 31, primarily in lower Manhattan and downtown Brooklyn.

Additionally, multiple protests are scheduled in various areas of New York City on June 1 including:

• 15:00 in Times Square;
• 17:00 at Sheridan Square in the West Village;
• 17:00 at Fulton Street and Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn;
• 18:00 at Avenue D and East 9th Street in Manhattan;
• 18:00 at Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. (86th Street between Fourth and Fifth Avenues);
• 19:00 in Astoria Park in Queens;
• 19:30 at McCarren Park in Brooklyn; and
• 22:00 at Kings Plaza in Mill Basin, Brooklyn.
  

Further protests and unrest are likely in the area in the near term.

Context

George Floyd died while being arrested by Minneapolis police officers on May 25. The four arresting police officers were subsequently fired, and one has since been charged with murder. Black Lives Matter (BLM) supporters gathered on May 26 to denounce the death and actions of the police officers. Clashes ensued between protesters and riot police; with demonstrators throwing bricks and projectiles at police and police property, and police responding with tear gas and rubber bullets as they attempted to disperse the crowds. Protests have since spread to a number of cities across the US.
