Indonesia: Flash flood death toll in South Sulawesi increases as recovery efforts continue July 16 /update 1

Emergency rescue authorities in South Sulawesi province's North Luwu regency announced on Thursday, July 16, that the death toll from floods that began earlier in the week has increased to at least 21 people, with dozens still missing. Flash flooding began in the region on Monday, July 13, which buried hundreds of homes in mud after nearby rivers burst their banks. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency has reported that more than 1600 displaced residents are currently in temporary shelters. Casualty figures are expected to increase as rescue and recovery teams continue searching in affected areas. 

Further flooding and associated transportation disruptions are to be anticipated in the affected areas over the near term.
