Indonesia: Workers demonstrate in Jakarta July 29

Event

Members of the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPI) demonstrated in Jakarta on Wednesday, July 29, to protest a new employment law. Reportedly, participants gathered in front of the National Parliament (DPR/MPR) building, and traffic along the Gatot Subroto road to Semanggi-Palmerah was temporarily disrupted due to the rally. The demonstration passed off peacefully and no clashes or arrests were reported. 

KSPI has reportedly vowed to continue demonstrations weekly, culminating in mass demonstrations nationwide on August 14 when parliament will resume discussions on the bill.

Further protests over the issue are to be anticipated in the coming weeks. Associated disruptions are to be expected in the vicinity of any protest site.

Context

The omnibus bill on job creation has reportedly caused controversy due to its alleged potential impact on labor rights. Indonesia's president Joko Widodo initiated the bill to attract foreign investment, and thus create job opportunities in Indonesia. However, critics believe the bill will undermine job security, and reduce rights in other ways. Environmentalists have also warned of the potential negative impacts of additional companies establishing themselves in Indonesia.
