Event

Heavy rains and associated flooding and mudslides have left at least 58 people dead in southern and central Japan, as poor weather conditions continue into Wednesday, July 8. The rain, which has been affecting southern Japan in recent days, is moving northeast, causing rivers to burst their banks and mudslides in central Japan. Floods were reported on Wednesday in Nagano and Gifu provinces, while further damages were caused in Kagoshima and Oita. The majority of the fatalities have been reported in Kumamoto, where 14 people remain missing. A total of 3.6 million people have been advised to evacuate, although the advice is not mandatory. The rain is expected to continue throughout the week over Honshu island, with further heavy rain forecast through the weekend.

Disruptions to travel and utilities are to be anticipated in the coming days as a result of the adverse weather conditions.

Advice

Those in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
