Papua New Guinea: 6.9-magnitude earthquake strikes 114 km north of Kokoda (Oro province) on July 17; tsunami threat lifted /update 1

Event

On Friday, July 17, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 6.9-magnitude earthquake 114 km (70 mi) north of Kokoda (Oro province). The earthquake struck at a depth of 85 km (53 mi) at 12:50 (local time). The US Tsunami Warning System had previously issued a tsunami threat for the eastern coast of PNG for potentially hazardous waves, however, this has now been lifted. Tremors were reportedly felt in Port Moresby, but there have been no immediate reports of damage and casualties.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g., under a table), move away from windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
