Syria: Airstrike targets Iran-backed fighters in Deir Ez-Zor Governorate July 11

Event

On Saturday, July 11, an airstrike in the Al-Bukamal area of Deir Ez-Zor Governorate reportedly killed at least 35 Iran-backed fighters allied to the Assad regime. Reports also indicate that two high-ranking commanders were killed in the attack. The strike, which took place near the Iraqi border, was carried out by unidentified aircraft, with no group claiming responsibility as of yet. While not confirmed, Israeli aircraft reportedly carried out several airstrikes against Iranian targets in the region of Al-Bukamal in June, targeting logistics sites and fighters.

Further similar attacks are possible in Deir Ez-Zor Governorate over the near term.

Context

The Israeli military has struck more than 200 targets in Syria over the past two years, many of which have been arms depots and military facilities allegedly receiving arms and fighters from Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah group.
