Syria: VBIED attack causes casualties in Ras Al Ain (al-Hasakah Governorate) on July 26

Event

On Sunday, July 26, an explosion in Ras Al Ain (al-Hasakah Governorate) in northeastern Syria killed at least eight people and wounded a further 19. The blast occurred in a market in the town, which is near the Turkish border. The explosion was reportedly caused by a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED). A woman and a child were reportedly amongst the fatalities, and several of the injured are in critical condition. The Turkish Defense Ministry has alleged that Kurdish militants linked to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) are responsible for the attack.

Further attacks are likely in and around Ras Al Ain and throughout al-Hasakah Governorate in the near to medium-term.

Context

The Syrian Civil War - which began in 2011 - involves many parties, including the Syrian government, the Russian government, the Iranian government, the Turkish government, a US-led coalition, and numerous armed groups on the ground (including the Islamic State) with competing goals.
