North Korea: Flooding reported in North Hwanghae and Pyongyang on August 9

Severe flooding reported in North Hwanghae province and parts of Pyongyang on August 9; further rainfall expected

North Korean media announced on Sunday, August 9, that the province of North Hwanghae and areas of Pyongyang had been seriously affected by flooding. North Hwanghae, an important agricultural region, has seen farmland flooded and more than 900 homes damaged or destroyed. Efforts are underway to drain floodwaters. North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has ordered the military to assist in recovery efforts and released stocks of food and other supplies for North Hwanghae.

The Daedong River in Pyongyang is reportedly close to bursting, with traffic over two bridges in the city restricted due to concerns over water levels. State media has relayed a message to residents to take precautions should it flood.

Continued rainfall is forecast in Pyongyang and North Hwanghae in the near term. Expect a disruption to transportation while rainfall continues.
