UK: Yellow storm warnings in place for much of the UK through August 17

UK Met Office issues yellow storm warnings for large parts of the UK through August 17; follow authority advice and maintain heightened sense of vigilance

Warning

Event

Thunderstorms have been forecast across large parts of the UK through Monday, August 17, bringing the chance of flooding, travel disruption, and power cuts, according to the UK Met Office. Currently, the warning applies to Wales and the majority of England until Monday, and forecasts have warned of potential damage to buildings from lightning strikes and strong winds.

In Scotland on Wednesday, August 12, torrential rain and thunderstorms have already caused flooding and disruption; a major incident was declared in Fife as a result. In Fife's Pettycur Bay Holiday Park, 28 people were rescued after a landslide impacted the site on Wednesday. Also on Wednesday, three people were killed after a train derailed near Stonehaven.

Associated flooding, infrastructure damage, power outages, and transportation disruptions are possible in the region over the coming days. Up-to-date information can be found on the Met Office website here.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
