Protesters gather in Port-au-Prince and set fire to police vehicles on September 16; avoid protests

Protesters have gathered in Port-au-Prince on Wednesday, September 16, to demand the release of a police officer, Jean Pascal Alexandre, and to demand better police working conditions. Demonstrators reportedly blocked parts of the Route de Delmas with burning tires, including in the vicinity of the Carrefour de l'Aéroport and Delmas 47. Demonstrators also marched along the road towards Petion-Ville. Gunfire has been reported in the area. A number of vehicles operated by the security forces have also been set on fire.

A heightened security presence is likely in the area in the near term, with an associated risk of localized travel disruptions.
