Tunisia: Recent heavy rains kill at least six September 12

Heavy rains and associated flooding kill at least six as of September 12; monitor weather alerts

Warning

Event

Tunisian authorities reported on Saturday, September 12, that at least six people have died in flood-related incidents following heavy rainfall across the country in the past week. The Civil Protection Agency has recorded flooding in numerous regions in the country from Jendouba, an agricultural area in the northwest, to Mahdia, a tourist region in the east. Heavy rains on Thursday briefly generated floodwaters over a meter (3ft) deep in several districts of Tunis, causing damage to homes, market stalls, and a hospital.

Further rainfall and resulting flooding are expected to cause additional disruptions to transportation, business, and utilities.

Advice

Those in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, including evacuation orders. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.
