Turkmenistan: Heightened security nationwide ahead of Independence Day September 27

A heightened security presence and additional measures should be expected in Ashgabat, and other urban centers, ahead of Independence Day celebrated on Sunday, September 27. Police and security forces have deployed along highways leading to the capital, performing stop and search operations on all vehicles coming from the provinces, checking the identification and documentation of drivers and passengers, and registering every person entering. Similar checks should be expected in the capital and in other cities over the coming days. An increased police presence has also been reported in Mary province. Medical checkpoints, erected at entrances to the capital amid the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, have reportedly been removed. Previous years have seen festivities, concerts, and parades held in the capital and urban centers, as well as military parades. Authorities gave no prior explanation of the latest measures, though they have previously been enhanced ahead of major public events. In addition to Independence Day on September 27, Ashgabat will host a meeting of the rubberstamp People's Council expected to approve a package of amendments to the constitution.

Additionally, travelers should still expect a heightened police presence in Ashgabat and other urban centers, around government buildings and sensitive security installations.
