Warning

Event

A gas pipeline exploded in Samawah (Al Muthanna governorate) on Friday, October 30, killing at least two people and injuring more than 50 others. Firefighters have since contained the fire after shutting down the supply to the pipeline. Energy officials stated that the domestic line transports gas from southern oil fields to feed power stations in some southern cities and a key power station near Baghdad. Authorities have yet to report on why the explosion occurred, although they have stated that the pipeline passes near a known militia force camp near Samawah.

Localized disruption is to be expected in the area over the coming hours.

Advice

Individuals in the Samawah area are advised to monitor developments, keep battery-operated devices fully charged, as able, and refrain from strenuous outdoor activity amid high temperatures.
